The history of the hussar goes back to the 14th century, when unorganized soldiers formed themselves into units in the Balkans, and consequently turned themselves into units of light cavalry within and without the kingdom of Hungary. This history, which encompasses both the military and cultural history of the legendary Hungarian hussar, continued nearly unabated until the official disbanding of the forces in 1995.
