A legkorábbi kerámia a kolumbiai Puerto Hormiga és San Jacinto (Kr. e. 3990–3715), ill. az ecuadori Valdivia (Kr. e. 3200) lelőhelyről származó, főként nőket ábrázoló, néhány cm magas agyagszobrocskák. Az agyagszobrászat Mexikóban vált önálló műfajjá.
