Dreisziger’s is a rather balanced account of how Hungary ended up entering World War II on the Axis side. Relying heavily on some classic sources such as Professor Macartney’s „October Fifteenth”, regent Horthy’s Memoirs or D. Jaszi’s „Revolution and counterrevolution in Hungary”, it is a readable and quite accurate narrative.
An interesting book for those keen on understanding Hungary’s evolution into an Axis satellite.
A brave man roamed the streets of Budapest those days. He took photographs between October 23rd and November 11th of 1956. So that a sign would remain. And when freedom came again and it left even the murderers unpunished, his widow gave the concealed photographs to the Historial Institute on one condition: neither her nor her husband’s name should be made public.
Jaap Scholten travelled extensively in Romania and Hungary and sought out the few remaining aristocrats who experienced the night of 3 March 1949. He spoke to people who survived the Romanian Gulag and met the youngest generation of the once distinguished aristocracy to talk about the restitution of assets and about the future.
