Kodály believed that the only way to preserve Hungarian culture and identity was to teach the young people the folk music and culture of their ancestors. He is well known internationally as the creator of the Kodály method of music education.

Music illustrations form an unusually large and rich part of this book and in themselves make up a kind of anthology of Hungarian music, from the earliest know melodies, through medieval and renaissance periods to Bartok and Kodaly.
