At the age of 14 Georg Koves is plucked from his home in a Jewish section of Budapest and without any particular malice, placed on a train to Auschwitz. He does not understand the reason for his fate.
It is Easter Sunday, April 1945, early in the morning, maybe just dawn. We stand still, like frozen grey statues. Us. Seven hundred and thirty women, wrapped in wet, grey, threadbare blankets, standing in the rain. Our blankets hang over our heads, drape down to the soil. We hold them closed with our hands from the inside, leaving only a small opening to peer out, so that we save the precious warmth of our breath…
Az itt felvázolt Batthyány-kép némileg eltér a megszokottól. Ez a Batthyány nem az udvar kegyeit kereső, megalkuvó politikus. Ellenkezőleg: ragaszkodik nézeteihez, követeléseket támaszt, lemondással fenyegetőzik, mint Innsbruckban. Alkotmányos monarchista, de amikor a király és az alkotmány között kell választania, habozás nélkül az alkotmányt és a népfelséget védelmező országgyűléssel működik együtt.
