Leírás

Dr Istvan Benedek, author of The Gilded Cage is a doctor and man of letters. This book of his is the result of an experiment that he conducted for years. In it the author tells of his experiences in a ‘mental asylum’ which he himself had organised.

Dr Benedek observed his patients with the eyes of the expert specialist and of the writer, studied them, lived among them, and tried to create for them a substitute for ‘real’ life, in which they might find their place. He gilded the walls of the prison of these people secluded from the world, to make life endurable to them, and to make it easier for them to bear the burden of their disease. The deep humanitarianism of Dr Istvan Benedek’s experiment lends special value to this peculiar novel, full of autobiographical details, every line of which makes interesting reading.
